What would you do?

We recently had a cat show up at our door with no collar. It looked rather mangy but he was hungry so we gave him some tuna. A neighbor told us it belonged to our neighbor, Deb, so we took Mittens(aka mangy cat) back home. Deb thanked us and then told us that she was taking him to the vet the next day to put him down. Kenneth caught on to that really fast. She said he was just too old. Almost twenty years old. Anyway, about an hour later Mittens was back in our yard. I haven't fed him, but I haven't taken him back either. I feel terrible about taking him to his death. Kenneth thinks he knows what's going to happen so he's hiding at our place. I don't know. It's been 4 days and he's still here.
Would you take him back?

No way! Harbor the cat as long as you can! Give him some love in his final days. Do you know why he was being put to sleep? Does he have an illness, or is he in pain? Those would be the only reasons I could justify returning him to his owner. If he's suffering... that's not a good thing. But if he's just trying to escape, then keep him as long as you can!

Please be careful. A neighbor couple houses down, has tons of cats, thus creating a feral cat problem, they can reproduce VERY quickly. The stench around the house is disgusting and the boys haven't been able to use our yard freely (due to several poop accidents), which by the way, you will soon notice the smell, ugh!! And cat poop can be toxic, it can be dangerous specially for your baby. So...you either become responsible for it or take it back to your neighbor.

Maybe tell the neighbor he is there, then it will make it her decision if she wants to come and get it.

Do what you think is best. You obviously aren't comfortable with the thought of him being put down. Get more information from the owner and find out what "too old" actually entails. Like Emily said, is he in a lot of pain?

If he's just on his last leg and she's sick and tired of caring for him then I say give him sanctuary.

I think I'd do what Ilise suggested while inquiring more details on why the cat must die. And if the cat IS simply "too old" and just a pain in the bumpkins for your neighbor to care for, I'd go with Char and give the poor cat sanctuary with your neighbor's blessing.

Feed the cat already! It's always right to be kind.

As an animal lover, I would say let the cat stay. But I also agree with Ilise. Let the neighbor know the cat is at your house. If the cat is content outside, he's not really hurting anything.
